thriceinatrice asked: Suppose I control Transcendence, and my opponent controls Tainted Remedy. If I were to lose life, would this start a loop of life loss with no end point? Magic deals only in precise and numbers numbers, so I can't skip to having "negative infinity life" and I can't ignore an infinite regress of life loss and move on with the game. How do we resolve this?

This combination of cards will create an endless loop as follows:

  • Transcendence’s controller loses some amount of life.
  • Transcendence’s second triggered ability triggers. When the trigger resolves, Tainted Remedy’s replacement effect causes Transcendence’s controller to lose life instead of gaining life.
  • Transcendence’s second triggered ability triggers. When the trigger resolves, Tainted Remedy’s replacement effect causes Transcendence’s controller to lose life instead of gaining life.
  • Transcendence’s second triggered ability triggers…
  • Because of Transcendence’s first ability, the player can’t lose the game from having a negative life total, so the loop goes on forever unless a player chooses to break it. (They’re not required to if they can, though.)

When the game enters an endless loop of mandatory actions like this, the game ends in a draw.
